THE CARPENTER CO. GEOFOAM SOLUTION
Geofoam is the generic term for any foam material used in a geotechnical (on- or in-ground) application. Geofoams are multi-functional and versatile. They are used for thermal insulation, lightweight fill in earthwork, compressible inclusions to reduce earth pressures, vibration and sound damping, and drainage. Geofoams are a modern, synergistic complement to other geosynthetic products as well as traditional construction materials.
But what is EPS Geofoam?
EPS is expanded polystyrene, a high quality material that has been produced since the 1950's in a controlled manufacturing environment. It is a closed cell product that is environmentally friendly in manufacturing, both in the ground and in ground water. EPS is an excellent thermal insulator (approximately 98% air by volume and therefore only 1% to 2% of the density of soil and rock), can be manufactured to provide needed long-term stiffness and strength to support heavy loads and can be manufactured to be relatively compressible if desired.
EPS Geofoam is safe, clean and easy to use and can be installed or removed in virtually any weather situation. In short, EPS has proven itself to be one of the best and most versatile geosynthetic materials around.
Geofoam can be the solution to a host of engineering problems including:
- Road embankments
- When poor soil conditions exist
- Bridge abutments and approach fills
- Against retaining walls to reduce lateral loads
- Lateral load earth pressures
- Frost heave problems
- Cold storage warehouse design
- Refrigerated storage tanks
- Lightweight fill applications:
- Compressible-Inclusion applications:
- Thermal-Insulation applications:
When you look at the cost of the whole project, Geofoam can offer significant cost savings due to:
- Reduced installation cost
- Speed of installation and the ability to work in almost any weather condition
- Reduced cost of future repairs and maintenance
- Savings in other materials due to reduced load bearing needs
- Increased flexibility in engineering design
Carpenter Co. has four manufacturing locations along the East Coast that allow us to fill your Geofoam needs quickly, economically and most importantly reliably.
